I had the same situation with both the first fusion two years ago and the second, subtalar fusion last year. When the doc told me to put the boot on after the last cast came off and told me to walk, I was in pain. So he told me to take it easy and use the crutches as needed until I could go without them. That was much easier for me and I healed fine. But, my next surgery this summer is to have all the screws pulled out because one of them I can feel right near my heal and it hurts. Doc said it was better to take them all out than just one because they all need to come out if I ever want an ankle replacement down the line.
