It is thought that this condition is caused by a virus. Treatments focus on symptom control and not so much on the cosmetic side of it, although this can be quite bothersome, especially for those like you with a dark complexion. Sometimes antiviral drugs can shorten the duration a bit, so that could decrease the spread of the rash and patches somewhat.
