Hi Melanie-

The thyroid works in a feedback loop like many glands. It is complex in that your thyroid has an effect on so many body processes. I found a great explanation of how that feedback loop works: http://www.endocrineweb.com/thyfunction.html. For a slightly more technical description, you can look here: http://users.rcn.com/jkimball.ma.ultranet/BiologyPages/T/Thyroid.html.

A general description of hypothyroid and what it means is here: http://www.endocrineweb.com/hypo1.html. The EndocrineWeb is a good source of information on this.

As Alison stated, we have information here on our site as well, and we have discussion involving other women who have hypothyroid. It is estimated to affect about 10% of women, I believe.

I suggest that if the hypothroidism does not resolve or the meds your physician gives you do not make you feel better, be sure and see an Endocrinologist. This is the specialty that deals with thyroid, and they are usually the most current with cutting edge information on treatment.

Thanks for writing, and if we can give you further resources, please let us know.
