Hi sriq - There have been a number of studies about the effect of MSG on the fetus. Some studies that used mice found that high doses could cause damage fetal brain development BUT the same study has not been done in humans.

The Food and Drug Administration's position is that there's no conclusive evidence of toxicity and therefore MSG is recognized as generally safe for people to use. It's considered to be as safe as sugar, salt and baking soda.

I checked with some pediatric sources and they indicate that there's no evidence that MSG would harm your baby and that it would be very difficult to ingest a large enough dose to create a problem. Of course, a large dose might create a problem for you - such as a headache - and isn't a good idea.

You should be okay in continuing to use MSG daily during your pregnancy unless your doctor has given you reasons to avoid salt, such as concern about high blood pressure.

Best wishes for you and your baby boy or girl. Will you let us know when he/she is born?
Take care, Pat
