When you go online and look at information about cancer survival you will often see referrals to a "five-year" survival rate because that's a standard often used as a measurement in clinical trials and therefore reported in journals.

The American Society of Clinical Oncology offers a lot of information on both their professional website and a separate one for consumers. It can be very, very hard to absorb what's being said while also thinking ahead about what you want to ask, and having a friend along to help out can make a major difference.
