Hi J-Fer

Googling symptoms is an easy way to freak yourself out. You always come across the worst case scenario diagnoses!

I have some questions for you. I also want you to know we cannot diagnose anything, but we may be able to get you information.
Do you have any symptoms other than the swelling and pain? Is there a discharge? Is your eye red? Do you have anything that looks like a bump or pimple on the eyelid? Is your vision affected? Does the child have any symptoms?

Most commonly would be injury as you thought, or something like pinkeye/conjuctivitis which kids sometimes spread rampantly: https://www.empowher.com/condition/pink-eye. Styes are also pretty common: https://www.empowher.com/condition/stye/symptoms.

If you have vision changes such as flashing lights in your eye, you should get emergency care: https://www.empowher.com/detached-retina/content/detached-retina-eye-emergency.

If you think you have a little something in your eye like an eyelash or bit of dust it can be very irritating, and sometimes rinsing your eye out with sterile saline solution as is used by people with contact lenses can help with that.

The main message is that you do not want to risk your vision, so if the symptoms worsen, are affecting your vision, or do not improve it is definitely worth calling an ophthalmologist for an appointment just to be sure you don't have a serious problem such as a foreign body or medical issue like a detached retina.

Please let us know if we can help further. Good luck.
