Hi waspy,
I can happen for your period to be irregular when it previously was regular. Our bodies are constantly changing, and being affected by the environment, new diet, exercise, stress, etc. Generally speaking though, I've been told most irregular periods can be tracked for a month or two and if the condition persists, make an appointment to be checked out.
I was recommended a book called, "A Woman's Moods: What Every Woman Must Know About Hormones, The Brain, and Emotional Health." It deals with exactly what you are talking about. There also is an article on EmpowHer: https://www.empowher.com/menstrual-cycle/content/what-normal-period?page=0,0
What's the bottom line? If you're concerned about your cycle, you should give your doctor's office a call and at least speak with a nurse on staff to determine if what you're experiencing warrants a visit with the doctor.
