It is normal, during your first month-ever, to have breakthrough bleeding while using hormonal contraception. Actually, it is normal at other times, too, but especially during your first month....you have only been taking them for 3 weeks!
Yes, your pills should provide you with 99% protection against pregnancy if you have been taking them correctly and consistently every day. (You said you have not missed a pill...great!!!).
If your bleeding is still heavy, even while taking the active pills, be sure to call your doctor and let them know. There are many different types of pills and brands that you may need to try before finding the best fit.
