Okay. First things first. You have to sign a consent for surgery. They cannot do surgery without your consent. So if you do not understand 100% what they are doing and why, DO NOT SIGN. If you do not sign the consent, and tell them it is because you do not yet understand what is happening, the surgeon will have to explain it all to you again to be sure you understand.
Ask the doctor what you have asked us: Why do you want to do surgery? What will the surgery do for me? What are the risks? What are possible complications? What are the benefits? What is my diagnosis? Will I need other treatment such as chemotherapy or radiation?
Write your questions down, take them with you, and do not agree to surgery until you understand what is happening. This is your right as a patient. If the staff gets irritated with you, too bad. It's your body and you need to know what it going on.
