I hear a couple of things going on here. First, you are having a long distance relationship with someone you don't know very well. That is fine, I mean, it won't hurt anything to see where it goes.
The main thing I hear is you playing games with this guy. Testing him, fighting for no reason, being unkind...I don't know if this is just a lack of maturity on your part, or if you have some issues that make you mistreat people. But it sounds like for all the worry you have about being taking advantage of somehow, you are the one who isn't being honest or kind.
Leave friends out of the picture. It doesn't matter what his friends think or what they gossip about. What matters are your interactions with him. If you don't really like him, don't string him along. Don't be mean to him, don't play games with him by testing him or teasing him. Treat him how you want to be treated. The relationship is between the two of you, no one else, so make those interactions nice ones.
If you don't really like him all that much, don't waste his time or yours. Just move on. If you do like him or love him, act like it or you will lose him. No one wants to be the butt of a joke.
