It is important to follow the patient information brochure instructions that came with your medication. If you do not understand these instructions, please call your doctor, as they can be confusing when you use them the first time. It is important to know how to use them consistently and correctly, and also know how to take any accidental missed pills correctly.

To answer your question, your type of birth control should say, "During the first cycle, contraceptive reliance should not be placed on birth control pill until an active tablet has been taken daily for 7 consecutive days and a non-hormonal back-up method of birth control (such as condoms) should be used during those 7 days."

Once you take the active/hormone-containing birth control pills for 7 consecutive days, your birth control pills provide 99% effectiveness at preventing pregnancy when not using a condom.

If you ever miss a pill accidentally, be sure to use a back up method of birth control (condom) until you have taken 7 active pills consecutively.
