Anon - Since you are interested in this surgery you have most likely reviewed the criteria established by the National Institutes of Health, which include:
* Be unable to achieve or maintain a healthy weight through diet and exercise
* Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or higher (extreme obesity)
* Have a BMI of 35 to 39.9 and also have a serious weight-related health problem, such as diabetes or high blood pressure
In general most surgeons will not exclude a person who has celiac disease, however, there have been cases reported in which bariatic surgery worsened the symptoms and you need to be prepared for that outcome.
If you do have the surgery we would love to hear back from you and learn how you're doing and what, if any, impact it has on your celiac disease. Good luck to you!
