Hi shawnie,
Thank you for your question and welcome to EmpowHer. Please don’t feel like your life is over, HPV is very common and can even resolve itself over time in some cases. The term “mild” versus “moderate” or “severe” dysplasia is the amount of abnormal changes to your cells on your cervix. Mild by definition affects 25% of the thickness of the cells that cover your cervix. The term “moderate” affects 50% while “severe” effects pretty much all of your cells.

Mild dysplasia usually doesn’t need any treatment as sometimes it can spontaneously disappear over time, although it can take several years. Yearly follow up with your OBGYN would be essential to see if there are any changes. This certainly could explain why your 2011 pap test showed up normal. It is not exactly clear why dysplasia disappears but this could certainly be a good sign.

Of course, you should always have protected sex to protect yourself against STDs in the future. Most certainly, this doesn’t mean that you cannot have a fruitful and long-lasting relationship. Just keep following up with your doctor and keep yourself protected in the future. I hope this helps. Please keep us posted.
