Before being considered for the stomach band operation, sometimes insurance providers ask that you lose weight on your own before considering covering it. This is a good idea even if you're paying out of pocket, especially if it's because you'd like to lower your blood sugar. The best way to improve your overall health and lower blood sugar, cholesterol, etc. is by changing your diet and incorporating some sort of exercise such as walking 3-4 times a week. If you can't find a way to change your eating habits, the surgery may be in vain. There is also no guarantee that a stomach band surgery will eliminate Diabetes.
