I've had recurrent symptoms after being bitten by a brown recluse spider 9 years ago. Yes, it has lasted that long ! Was only recurring 2-3 times a year for about a week at a time, now occurring more often, as every 6 weeks. No open sores or pus, just a large raised quarter-sized area that has intense itching for about 2-3 days. Best thing I've found to do: as soon as itching is noticed, apply Benadryl cream to area covered with a bandaid, and change it twice daily. Absolutely no itching unless you want a hematoma. If the skin becomes open or broken, replace the Benadryl with Neosporin ointment. Nothing else (steroids, antibiotics, oral antihistamines) seems to make the week-long cycle any shorter. Also noticed the affected area can move around within an space the size of my hand, so may indicate a toxin that can spread under the subcutaneous or through the lymphatic system).
