Hello, Anon.

Emergency contraceptives are up to 95% effective when taken as prescribed within the first 24 hours and up to 90% effective when taken within 72 hours. It works by preventing ovulation and stopping a pregnancy from starting. It will not end a pregnancy already in place. They should be taken for emergencies, not used as a regular method of birth control.

Why have you taken 8 pills? The dosing for levonorgestrel 1.5mg tablets is one tablet should be taken as soon as possible, preferably within 12 hours, and no later than 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. For the two pill dosing, a second pill is taken 12 hours after the first, but both can also be taken at one time. 8 pills should not have been taken.

If your period is late or missed, you will need to test for pregnancy.
