Has this happened before? It's possible you are having an allergic reaction of some sort if this came on suddenly.
Sometimes diseases that affect the entire body, such as diabetes, heart or kidney disease, can result in excess fluid buildup (edema) that is often concentrated in the legs and feet, leading to swelling not only of the ankles but also of the feet and lower legs.
If the swelling continues you need to see a doctor so you know what is causing it.
