Hi Janifar!

Thank you for sharing this very important information with the EmpowHER community! Many of our members have young children so this post is very helpful and insightful!

As common core standards become required in most states, it's also important for parents to know that children are being expected to perform at higher levels than in the past. Just a word of caution, that if you child hasn't quite 'mastered' materials in pre-school or elementary school, don't be quick to worry that your child could have a learning disability.

If you child appears to struggle, certainly bring your concerns to their teacher and engage more with your child during times of homework and outside learning.

Your child's school should embrace your concerns, but also be cautious when discussing your child's progress. We always want to take a positive approach and focus on what they have learned verses what they have not yet mastered. A child's self esteem is very important during these early, formative years as they begin forming opinions and perspectives about the world and those around them. We want to encourage self confidence and help our children do their best-and that all begins with positivity and love.

Thank you again Janifar!

Best,

Kristin
