Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community! I too long for the pearly white smile that adorns magazine covers all across the country! While I agree that it is very expensive and time consuming to reach this level of pearly white (not to mention the airbrushing techniques used to achieve this look) I have tried a few home remedies myself.
To take advantage of a DIY home remedy I suggest these tips:
You can make your own tooth whitening concoction at home for just pennies.
1. Combine the following ingredients and apply with your toothbrush.
-toothpaste
-1 teaspoon of baking soda
-1 teaspoon of hydrogen peroxide
-Half a teaspoon of water
2. Hydrogen Peroxide- You can swish a tablespoon of Hydrogen Peroxide before brushing or by pouring a small amount on a cotton swab and rubbing it on your teeth.
3. Strawberries are known for their acidity and you can use them to remove stains and help lighten teeth. I have tried it and it does seem to work. I cut one in half and rub it on my teeth for a few minutes. Experts have said to limit this practice to once a month.
There are over the counter options you can buy at the pharmacy that are far less expensive than a trip to the dentist. Give a try to the natural home remedy approach and if you still want whiter teeth, there are a lot of products that are safe and easy to use for less than $50 at your local pharmacy.
Good luck! Let us know what you tried and what worked for you!
