The long answer is there's a long window of potentially fertile days, because women can ovulate anywhere from 9-16 days before their menstrual period---and that is just an average. Some women might even miss ovulating during a cycle. If you do ovulate within that time frame, the egg lives about 24 hours (if not fertilized), and sperm can live up to 3 days before reaching the egg; all of these factors are included in this time frame, but you can see how it can be a "hit or miss", and there is about a 20% chance of pregnancy during each cycle.
