Hi thedivah and welcome back to EmpowHER.

Anoxic brain damage is injury to the brain due to a lack of oxygen. Brain cells without enough oxygen will begin to die after about four minutes. Treatment typically will focus on efforts to limit brain damage and begin the recovery process. Contrary to what you often see in the movies, recovery is usually a very long and very slow process. Recovery can take months, or even years. In some cases, the patient can't achieve full recovery but can learn to adapt and live well with remaining disabilities.

In terms of how long it will take before your brother can recognize one voice from another, it's very hard to say. I suggest getting to know the members of his treatment team, they will be able to give you the best information. If you don't know who they are then you can usually work with a hospital social worker who can help you get the information that you need.

Many communities also have local brain injury support groups. Being with others who have loved ones who've experienced brain injuries can be extremely helpful, and I suggest you reach out to see if such a group is in your area or online. Nationally the Brain Injury Association of America is a great organization, and they can help locate local chapters throughout the country.

Hope that helps, and you are able to connect with others soon who can help you as you continue to support your brother.

Best,

Pat
