If the hpt came back negative that should be pretty accurate if if it was taken after the missed period. Women can get a false negative when taken too early, but in your case, it shouldn't be too early since your period is late. It's also normal to have a cycle get off even when you are used to it being right on schedule.
You could take another hpt (don't take a generic brand and take it with your first pee in the morning.) If it comes back negative, and your period still doesn't come in a few days...make a call to your doctor and go in for an exam.
