Hello, and thank you for your question.  

I understand how uneasy you must be feeling as you start this new form of birth control.  I’d love to give you some more information to help you more clearly understand what to expect.

First of all it is important for you to know which kind of IUD you have.  There is a copper IUD that can stay in the uterus for 5-10 years. And there is a hormonal IUD that can stay in the uterus for up to 5 years. 

The hormonal IUD can cause mood swings. This is normal during the first few months because your body is still getting acclimated to the hormones. Copper IUDs generally do not cause mood swings. This method of birth control is effective immediately.  Only 2 out of 1,000 women get pregnant with hormonal IUDs and only 6 out of 1,000 get pregnant with the copper IUD.
