Irregular periods or not necessarily cause for alarm. However when you have prolonged menstrual bleeding it is time to see a doctor. It would be impossible for me to tell you the exact reason for the prolonged bleeding because there are many possibilities.
The first and most common possibility is a hormonal imbalance which is usually treated with taking oral contraceptives.
