The swelling and itchiness is a sign of vulvovaginitis which is caused by:
yeast, bacteris, viruses, and parasites
bubble bath, soaps, feminine sprays, perfumes
vaginal birth control
early on-set menopause
lack of cleanliness
I understand you have a fear of gynaecologists. But as this point I think you should be more concerned about your health than the treatment. I encourage you to see one right away.
