Hi Anon,

Thank you for sharing your question with the EmpowHER community.

It's possible that you might be experiencing something called endometrial bleeding.

  • Endometrial bleeding occurs when some of the uterine wall was not discharged during the menstrual cycle. It may occur just after the cycle ends or just before the next cycle begins. Because the blood is old, it becomes dark brown in color.

At one point or another in a woman's life it's common that she may experience dark brown vaginal discharge.  Most cases are not serious, but some are.

In your case it is likely that since you are commonly irregular with regards to your menstrual cycle, the dark brown discharge may be old blood that your uterine wall is releasing.  Plus, since you are now starting to see red blood this also supports the above with regards to it happening just before your next cycle.

Here are some other reasons for brown discharge:

  • Pregnancy
  • Ovulation
  • Pelvic Inflammatory disease

Whenever we experience something different, it's always a good idea to check in with the doctor.  Call and schedule an appointment to discuss the changes  you are experiencing and to get an exam, just to be on the safe side.

I hope this helps.

Be well,

~Gillette
