Hello and welcome to EmpowHer,
Missing periods is nothing to worry about, (especially during adolescent years). But bleeding for longer than 7 days is a problem and not "normal." Prolonged bleeding can indicate may underlying conditions, some more severe than others. Doctors usually prescribe taking birth control pills to regulate periods because its often caused by a hormonal imbalance.
However, your doctor should check for these other possible causes before simply writing a prescription for birth control. Keep in mind that your doctor will not automatically discuss any of these possibilities. You will need to specifically ask about each one in order to have a thorough appointment.
-Uterine fibroids, non-cancerous growths of the uterus wall
-Endometrial hyperplasia, a thickened endometrium
-Problems with clotting
-Thyroid functioning
-Glandular issues
-Infection
-Ovarian cysts
-Uterine polyps
