Whether you are in menopause or not, prolonged bleeding even for a few weeks is dangerous. Bleeding for months is even more dangerous!
Possible causes include
-cancer
-disfunction of the ovaries
-uterine fibroids, cysts, or polyps
-Adenomyosis
-bleeding disorders

I strongly suggest that your doctor be as thorough as possible when exploring all the possible causes. You can also become anemic from prolonged bleeding. So, be sure to be tested be anemia as well.
