I had my ankle fused 12 years ago. No pain at all from the surgery. Had to use a walker and hop on my good ankle for 4 months (no weight bearing) so I got a wheelchair to use, so I could use my hands to cook and do other things. First time I walked the ankle swelled up, but eventually it was fine. When they fuse your ankle, you lose the ability to dorsi-flex,(the up and down movement) the only thing I have to be careful with is going down curbs, so I usually go to a handicap area that has a ramp. Going up steps is fine down steps, not so easy. I must always wear shoes/sneakers etc. some footware. I exercise three times a week in a gym and do water exercises everyday that I can. I could not get an ankle replacement due to the joint destruction done. Before the ankle fusion, I played tennis, ran marathons, very active, can't do that now a/c ankle,I can play golf(go up the t box backwards)any general walking you will be able to do.
