Hi Anon,

Thanks for sharing your question and welcome to EmpowHER!

Herpes simplex 1 can be spread through oral sores or secretions on the body - which can also be spread through things like kissing or sharing toothbrushes. For many people, herpes can go through periods of being dormant with no outbreaks.

Outbreaks can occur from a few causes including fatigue, sexual activity, sickness, and stress.

If you or your girlfriend have not broken out in 10 years, then it sounds like her condition is dormant and it is safe to continue engaging in sexual activities. There is always a chance that herpes can be passed on, but it sounds like her condition is dormant.

It's ultimately up to you and your partner to decide about having sex. Since you have been together 10 years and have not seen any outbreaks, it seems like you both feel comfortable enough with each other and staying sexually active.

If sores ever do become visible, chances of transferring herpes does increase.

There is no cure for herpes, but there are some treatments available that help reduce symptoms and keep the condition under control. For a full list of drugs, visit: https://www.drugs.com/condition/herpes-simplex.html

I hope this helps! Please let me know if I can help with anything else.

Best,
Erin
