Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome is characterized by severe pain during attempted vaginal entry (intercourse or tampons insertion), tenderness to pressure localized to the vulvar vestibule and redness of the vulvar. Which you probably already know as you say you have read about it. But it's never a good thing to self-diagnose. I would make an appointment with a gynecologist to discuss this and be examined.
