Please do not take this comment personally. I am a physician and you state that Soma can be addictive. Ok, I agree with that. Are you aware of how many substances can be addictive? Albuterol can be addictive, yet no body thinks about that. A common over the counter cough medicine is abused all the time and is well known yet nobody talks about that. Look it up and you will see what I mean. Dextromethorphan (DXM). As a physican I need to consider the risk of everything and then develop a plan of care that is safe with an understanding of the risks and benefits. If a patients pain is so bad they are considering suicide and they tell me that Soma will ease their pain what should I do? Please understand this is respectful patient that is not considered a drug addict. Really, what would you do? Would really tell the patient this is a medication that could be addictive, and I will refer you to a 1-800-suicide? I hope that Drs can have caring and compassion and not need to be stuck with absolute no's for a possible addictive medication. There are many medications that cause physical dependence so that is likely the biggest issue with stopping Soma.
One thing I learned early in my practice of Medicine, always is not always right, and never is not always right. So to never prescribe Soma can't always be right.
