Blood blisters are most commonly caused by oral trauma. Do not pop the blood blister; this can increase the risk of infection. If the blood blister is painful, use over-the-counter painkillers, such as ibuprofen, to reduce the pain. Blood blisters typically pop on their own and will naturally heal over the course of a week. Avoid acidic and salty foods because those can inflame the wound and prevent healing. If the blood blister is large and very painful or it persists, consult your dentist for an evaluation.
