Thank you for writing. I'm very sorry this happened to your sister - how frightening. Head trauma must never been taken lightly.

No cause for epilepsy can be found in seven out of ten people. For the remainder of epilepsy patients, there can be a number of factors that cause their seizures. Other factors that can cause damage to the brain and lead to seizure include:
• lack of oxygen at birth
• brain tumors
• head injuries - as in your sister
• genetic conditions (such as tuberous sclerosis)
• alcoholism
• Alzheimer's disease
• lead poisoning
• issues in brain development before birth
• meningitis or encephalitis

If you sister has a seizure-
• Stay with the person until he or she is completely alert.
• Don't shake the person or shout.
• Roll the person on his or her side to prevent choking
• Cushion the patient’s head.

Call 911 if the seizure lasts more than five minutes and if the person stops breathing.

If your sister has not contacted her doctor about these episodes yet, she needs to do so immediately as it could be something more serious.
