Could be IT band sprain. Those are the usual points of pain, the hip and the lateral side of the knee.
Might be overlooked by an orthopedic. That happened to me unfortunately. Muscles and tendon issues don't seem to be their strong area, just cortisone and talk of "possible surgery" even if years down the road.
No one needs that kind of talk, very non Hippocratic Oath to worry a patient for no reason. I would suggest seeing someone in the field of "physical medicine". They aren't surgeons, but if you truly would need that, you would be referred to one. Orthopedics not addressing muscles/tendons properly seems to be a disconnect, but it happens.
