Thrombocytopenia is also known as 'thin blood' and is characterized by a drop in the number of platelets in the blood. Whereas the normal levels of platelets are around 150,000 to 450,000 per microlitre, most definitions of thrombocytopenia involve levels of 50,000 and below. Signs and symptoms can include the appearance of bruising (purpura in the forearms) as well as nosebleeds and bleeding gums. Patients may also experience fatigue, weakness, and malaise.
