Hello, Anon! Thank you for posting.

There can be many causes of upper back/neck pain. Pain in this area is usually caused by soft tissue injuries, such as sprains, strains, stress, muscle tension caused by poor posture, or looking downward for long time periods, odd sleeping position, etc. Pain can radiate from the neck to the head.

Over-the-counter medication, such as ibuprofen, naproxen sodium or acetaminophen may help with pain. Take with food, and do not take more than the recommended dose.
Ice (to reduce pain and swelling).
Heat (after the first 72 hours).

Any sudden or severe pain, especially in the head or back of the head should be addressed immediately. If you are not feeling better, it's best to err on the side of caution and see a doctor.
