Thank you for your report on this conference. The doctor's view is interesting to hear. My concern is that some might want to self diagnose rather than consult a physician in hopes that the symptoms are not quite as serious as they could very well be. All the same, virtual communities do, indeed, permit interaction on a level that could not otherwise be achieved or feel as "comfortable," if not comforting. I do share the concern that a community or site could become encourage "over-focusing" on the disease rather than seeking professional help.
We can learn from the example of what other communities get right, or not, and perhaps help fill that void that seems to exist in getting information out to young patients.
