Testing blood sugars shouldn't hurt if you're using an ordinary meter (I don't know about pumps)... see, you can get ones where you can get blood from your arm rather than your finger, which is MUCH better - in particular if you use your hands for lots of things, i.e. musicians. The one I've got is a Freestyle Freedom one and gives almost identical results to when taking blood from the finger or thumb. I'm from the UK and got it from my specialist at the hospital for free.

I also always do my injections in public, it's fairly discreet (do them in my tummy) and if people do notice they usually either say nothing at all or just casually enquire. I notice that some people feel like they're being rude in asking me what it is but that goes to show that they're worried about possibly offending or upsetting me, rather than thinking I'm a weirdo. They're often the ones who are most interested in the condition.
