samiam, I couldn't agree with you more. I would LOVE to see tobacco companies put out business. My husband, who is from Vietnam, says smoking is an issue for all people of all ages. His father smoked for years and he picked up the habit for 12 years. He blames lack of advertising restrictions on tobacco in Asian countries.

Here's a few stats from an 18-month-old report from the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Fifty-nine percent of Asian men are smokers, compared to 22 percent of men in Australia and New Zealand.

While almost three-quarters of Chinese smokers said they plan to continue, two-thirds of male smokers in Australia and New Zealand say they want to quit.

Seventy percent of Chinese smokers think that the health risks of smoking are "negligible," only 4 percent believe there is a link between smoking and heart disease.

Three out of four Chinese smokers say they have no plans to quit, Reuters reported April 2, 2007.

On the flip side, Asian Americans have the lowest smoking prevalnce rates among adults according to a June 2007 report from American Lung Association.

Smoking rates among Asian women were over 45% less than the rates in women of other racial/ethnic groups. In 2005, 6.1% of Asian American women smoked.

As for influencing teens not to smoke, that's a tougher question. I'm not for scaring people, but sometimes cold, hard reality is the best approach (at least in the case of smoking.)
