According to a few posts on this site related to safe (safer?) plastics, the numbers to look for are:
"...bottles crafted from safer HDPE (plastic #2), low-density polyethylene (LDPE, AKA plastic #4) or polypropylene (PP, or plastic #5). Consumers may have a hard time finding water bottles made out of #4 or #5..." (the reference for this information is in second link below)
As far as your question related to which brand? I have three different brands of sippys in my house, and like you said, it is hard to locate the number; some of them don't include it on the product.
- Gerber sippy: I couldn't find a number
- Avent sippy: Also, could not find a number
- The First Years: number 5 (yeah)!
I am surprised, if #5 really is the "safer" kind of plastic, as The First Years sippy cups I have are the "disposable" kind, that come in a package of 5 (or more?) with lids, and are see-through colors of red, green and yellow. They are also the CHEAPEST, so what a deal! Now that my son is older, he is wanting to drink from a "big boy cup", so we have to look at the numbers on our plastic cups, too!
From what I understand about the less-safe plastics are they are the non-malleable bottles (think Nalgene); some of my sippy cups are made with the harder plastic. The First Year sippy cups are more pliable and soft, and thank goodness they are easy to find (all the large Baby warehouse-type stores have them, as well as Target and other large stores. Even our grocery store carries them).
