Q:

Does cleansing affect the menstrual cycle, and how?

Hi! I usually do two cleanses a year (spring and fall) and have always found that I started bleeding a few days into the cleanse, or right after the cleanse; in any case, always at a time where I should not have a period, according to my menstrual cycle... My doctor says this is not a real period, but urged by the cleanse, and that a "real" one should come at the regular time, so I should wait for that one before worrying... has anyone had this experience or has an explanation for it? Thanks!!!

I have been getting regular colonics for the last couple months. My first one I had lots of gas bubbles come out and felt fatigued for the rest of that day. With each session I had less and less gas, and less fatigue after my fourth one I had a LOT of waste come but felt great the whole day after.

Had my 5th session on Saturday, very little gas, lots of waste removed but this time I felt more tired than ever afterwards and started spotting on Sunday. My regular cycle ended a few days before my last colonic and my period is extremely regular. It's Monday and I'm still bleeding, not heavily, just the brown spotting like when my period is about to start or ending. I feel great, no cramping, lots of energy so I don't know if I'm getting cleaned out or if something is wrong.

Making an appointment to see my gynecologist tomorrow just to be safe.

So i started the 10 day lemon master cleanse on 5/5/14, and today is 5/10/14. Two days ago i started a very very light pink spotting, with the most intense aching pressure in my back. At the time i wasn't aware what it was really, but then the next day my period fully started and seemed as though it was going to be a regular type of flow....umm not the case. So the morning of 5/9 i put 2 extra overnight pads in my purse left for work and then it got crazy heavy, soaking through 2 pads (as i doubled up to be cautious) within a approximate 30minutes without realizing i was almost bleeding through my clothes. This went on from 8am-4:30pm when i got off (TGIF). It is now 4:36am Saturday and i woke up to this same extremely heavy-duty flow. I am positive the cleanse triggered this as i usually have clotting and this period not the case at all just a (and forgive me for being graphic) slaughter house amounts of bleeding. I hope this last only a regular time frame period, because at this rate of bleeding im foung to be purchasing some Depends

I know this post is a bit old but I am going through the same issues stated in your blog. Very intense bleeding (I call it murder scene like blood) I am on my 6th day which is normally the day I end my cycle but there is no sign of it leaving anytime soon. I actually started to cramp today and it should be over today. I am doing the candigone cleanse. I am just interested in knowing how it turned out for you?

I just began a yeast cleanse 3 days ago and began spotting only 8 hours into it. II'm using a product called Canidastroy. Supplements are taken orally 2x per day and sugar and yeast are to be avoided completely for 5 days. The program also discourages the intake of all processed foods. Yesterday I travelled 2 hours in the car unaware that heavy bleeding had begun. Embarrassed, I had to stop at a store for a change of clothing and more supplies. The bleed in has continued for a full 24 hours, soaking thru both a super plus tampon and overnight pad once an hour, every hour! After a sleepless night and flu-like symptoms, I contacted a free med-advice hotline. I've been advised to seek immediate medical attention at a local urgent care center or my local emergency room.

I did a yeast cleanse 2 years ago and have had problems with my menstrual cycle ever since. Although the cleanse did take care of my bloating and food-sensitivity problems, I ended up with many more issues. Prior to the cleanse, I did not have my period ever (I'm on the mini-pill). After the cleanse, I began to get extremely painful lemon-sized ovarian cysts, mostly on my left side, and bleeding for 2-3 months at a time. I have yet to find a doctor who can tell me why this happened or how to get it to stop. The only thing my OB/GYN says is to switch birth control, which is not the answer. Nevertheless, I was put on the depo shot (to supposedly deal with the cysts)...WORST decision ever!! That made the bleeding worse (2-3 months at a time) and I was still getting cysts. Plus, the depo lowered my testosterone and DHEA to virtually nonexistent levels and caused even more problems. I can't be on BC with estrogen in it, so I'm back to the mini-pill. I have no clue what the cleanse did to set off all of this, but I am insanely frustrated and have yet to find a solution.

Things I've tried, other than switching BC: multivitamins (did nothing), B-vitamins (did nothing), milk thistle (supposed to help with hormone imbalances by supporting liver function - did nothing), & ibuprofen (supposed to help lessen bleeding - maybe does a little).

It's nice to finally find others who have experienced the same thing. But, seriously, where are the answers/solutions?! And where are the doctors who can explain (and fix) this?!

A castor oil pack with heat over time will dissolve cysts and flush lymph.worth a try. I'm on an estrogen metabolizer and chaste tree extract to raise progesterone and lower estrogen. I think these may help you but I would suggest getting off the pill, nothing will screw you up faster.

Get off the pill-that is probably what is causing the problem, not the cleanse. It is not normal to take in chemicals and have no periods. Your body is made to have periods and the cleanse was probably trying to promote a normal, healthy bodily function. Check the side effects of your pill- one of them is probably cysts. If being on the pill was because you have uncomfortable periods, take more calcium. It usually helps with cramps- not that cheap stuff that you find at Walmart either. Get a quality calcium from a health food store and take lots! Your body only absorbs 10-15% of a vitamin. You might also need to get magnesium along with it as it will help you absorb it. Good luck.

I recently simply cut out caffeine and processed food products and also noticed spotting 7 days after my last period. I'm glad to hear others have experienced this as well!!

I am doing the master cleanse right now and started it the day after my normal period ended. A couple of days into the cleanse I started bleeding again and 7 days later I'm still on my "period". Similarly, I had a friend who recently started taking a large amount of vitamin/mineral/enzyme supplements before traveling overseas and complained of having a month long period. I've done some research, and from what I understand, menstruation is one of the body's natural methods of riding itself of toxins. So if you start a cleansing diet or add things to your body that speed up it's natural ability to rid itself of toxins, shedding of the lining of the uterus may begin as a way of detoxifying, even if the hormones present to trigger your period aren't present.

I actually had my first cleanse ever done today and experienced what your talking about above. I noticed I am having lite pink bleeding...not heaving by any means. Not sure why? I did have a little slight bleeding from the rectum right afterwards but that has since went away. I did ask why was I bleeding vaginally. The response was that sometimes the cleanse will encourage your period to come. The answer wasn't good enough that is why I am searching the internet to see if anyone else had experienced vaginal bleeding after a cleanse.
