Q:

How can I combat post-gallbladder-removal belly fat and weight gain during menopause?

Hello, in October 2008 I was well into menopause but had no real issues with belly fat or overall weight gain. Then I had my gallbladder removed due to painful attacks of my common bile duct, as well as gallstones. I am appalled at the weight I have gained since the surgical procedure. In fact it is so upsetting (none of my clothes fit) that I feel at times clinically depressed. I've never had to fight weight gain before. Now I have an "unsupportive spine" as well, and must take occasional bouts of oral steroids to control the inflammation. I also have had two spinal epidural steroid injections, and wonder if these injections could cause me to gain weight. Any comments would be most welcome. Thank you!

Beth, can you tell me what bile salt you are taking?
I had my gallbladder removed a year ago (Dec 09) and have had nothing but problems with digestion, & weight gain. I was taking a drug called Welchol to help w/ digestion which worked well, but I am having side effects (headache, body aches) and want to try something more natural. I am going to try a probiotic and possibly a supplement called Cholocol. Curious if that is what you take...
Thanks, Jenn.

I went to Whole Foods the other day and I spoke to a very knowledgable woman, who too, suffered since having her gallbladder removed. She complained of weight gain in her mid-section and problems with her digestive tract. She recommended that I take a Pro-biotic (like you take, jacmor0315). I bought a kind called PB8 by Nutrition Now. It is a Pro-Biotic Acidophilus. She also recommended that I take a blood builder, which contains vitamin C, Folate, Citamin B-12, and Iron, to help with my energy level. I really hope they help me!!!!! I also hope everyone else finds relief with their symptoms.

Taraw1979 - Be sure of what you are taking. What I take is a digestive multi-enzyme that has probiotics in them too. My husband made a mistake in buying the wrong kind for me because of the word "Probiotic" on the label. The ones I take have several of the digestive enzymes which helps my body to break down food so that the nutrients and vitamins can be absorbed by my body. This is what I believe is to be the reason for the low energy. Almost like you become malnourished, except gain weight instead of lose, which I still can't figure out. The ingredients on my bottle says: Betaine Hydrochloride, Pacreatin, Amylase, Protease, Bromelain, Papain, Pepsin, Ox Bile, Lipase, Cellulase and Lactobacillus Acidophilus. I don't know if all of these enzymes are needed or maybe a supplement which just emulsifies the fat content (like bile salt) would suffice. I believe it to be a game of trial and error. I, too, took Vitamin B-12 from my mom's suggestion and then discovered through a blood test I was overdoing it. So I stopped that. The only thing I take now are the enzymes with every meal, daily vitamin and fish oil. Also, Vitamins A, D, E & K are the vitamins lost when the fat in your foods *do not* get emulsified and the absorbed by your body. And I was deficient in Vitamin D. I couldn't get the Dr. to test me for a deficiency in the others. Hope this helps.

Hi. I was the Anonymous that posted on June 29, 2010. My gallbladder removal was in January. By April I was a mess. Fortunately after doing some major research online and finding alot of people like ourselves, I started taking Digestive multi enzymes. These are like miracle supplements to me and I do not ever eat a meal without taking these first. Within the first 48 hours of taking these with my meals I noticed a big difference. No stomach pains, my diarrhea slowed down and for the first week I was burping like crazy. But at the end of that week all the bloating I carried around during those months was gone. My energy also improved drastically. After being on them for five months now, I almost feel normal again. They have not helped as far as the weight gain goes. But I really haven't been trying very hard at that either. I did have some blood work done which showed I was Vitamin D deficient (Probably because I didn't even have enough energy to go outside to soak in the sun). I did start taking Vit D supplements but have noticed only a little improvement. I swear by these supplements. The ones I use are made by Spring Valley and are called Probiotic Multi-Enzyme Digestive Formula. I buy these at Walmart for $7.00 a bottle. One bottle lasts a good three to four weeks. I know of at least two other people with the same symptoms as I and tried these and it worked for them too. I don't know if I'll be on these forever, but until the medical field can figure out why we have these side effects from this surgery, it's the only thing that I can count on. I have heard that bile salts work too. These supplements do have ox bile in them as well. It's interesting to me that I hear a couple of you talk about asthma symptoms. I too have noticed a little extra phlegm in my lungs. I had read recently that this surgery could somehow affect the adrenal glands. Then I read somewhere else that malfunction of the adrenal glands could cause "asthma-like symptoms" because your bronchials are not opening up all the way like they should. Just a thought. I haven't researched it enough to understand how it's all related or how you would fix it. Maybe someone around here has any ideas? I hope any of this information is of some use to someone. I understand what it feels like to be in that condition. It was the worst place ever!!

Hello! I have been searching, researching and more searching for someone... anyone who might be having the same issues! I was relieved to know I was not the only one with these the same problems after my gallbladder removal! I had my gallbladder removed Jan 2009 and since that time I have put on 50lbs and I feel as though I have a spare tire around the top of my stomach! I read the last post from jacmor0315 on Sept 20,2010 and was so excited of the possibility of some relief! I went straight to Wal-Mart after work and bought the Probiotic Multi Enzyme and started taking as directed. Although it has only been a couple of days, I can tell the difference in my energy level, of course I believe it was non-existent before.. lol... now I actually have more energy than I have in a year! I cannot see a difference in the weight or the spare tire yet, but I DO expect to see a change soon. Thank you so much JACMOR0315 for all of your hard work in researching this issue and for your post to advise others!!! I have since sent this post to others I have recently found out have the same issues!!

I had my gallbladder removed in January 2010. Since then I have gained 30 lbs. I have had several other symptoms: depression, diarrhea, exhaustion. I started taking multi-enzymes with every meal and daily vitamin and fish oil in April. Within 24 hours of starting the enzymes there was an immediate difference. My energy level came up and the diarrhea has slowed way down. The depression has lifted as well. I'm 33 years old and have never had any medical problems. I am extremely upset that no one bothered to discuss with me the possible implications of having my gallbladder removed. All everyone ever said to me was that you can live without one. Over the last few months I have read everything I can find pertaining to the removal of gallbladders. I found alot that indicates there are no post removal effects, then I have found a whole lot of people like me. Although, these enzymes have helped, I am still not the same person I was before. Just today I went and saw my doctor seeking some answers and asked for blood work to be performed to see if I was deficient in anything. She dismissed the idea that any of my symptoms were even caused by my gallbladder removal. Unbelievable!! I have never had any issues with anything until my gallbladder was removed. I'm pretty sure that any body part, no matter how seemingly insignificant it is, being removed will have consequences! Needless to say I had to fire her and am on the search for a better doctor. Hopefully, one that can work with me to find answers on how to live a better quality life. So to all of you out there who are having post gallbladder removal problems, you are not alone!! Hopefully, you will find doctors who will listen to you and help find ways to make our lives more livable!! Good Luck!!

I had my gallbladder removed on March 31, 2009 (a year and a half ago) and I struggle with lots of problems. The number one problem is my weight gain. I have gained about 20lbs since the surgery. I am very active and I eat a low fat, healthy diet. I eat all natural and organic foods. The weight that I have gained is in my stomach. I have NEVER had belly fat before and it is very upsetting. I am up three sizes in my pants and my waist is up to 32 inches.
I also am having problems with my disgestive system. It seems like almost everything I eat goes right through me. I have diarrhea, stomach pains and cramping, and sometimes vomitting. I have had a colonosocopy and an upper endoscopy but the doctor did not see anything abnormal. He is making it seem like the removal of my gallbladder has nothing to do with these problems. However, they started after the surgery.
Also, my energy level is very low. I feel tired all the time. I am only 30 years old and do not have kids but I have trouble staying awake during the day. I am not sure if this is related to the lack of my gallbladder or not.
Oh wait, I'm not done yet, since the surgery I have also developed acid reflux, and breathing problems that could be asthma. I am on advair. I have trouble walking up steps, running, and long distant walks. It is a terrible feeling when I have to ask my boyfriend to slow up or take a break with me when we are walking. This could be contributed to my 20lb weight gain.
In conclusion, I wish I could find help. I want my old life back again. I wish I never had my gallbladder removed. It was the worse decision of my life. I should have dealt with the pain of my diseased gallbladder. Maybe that would have gone away, not like these problems that seem like they are lifelong. :(

Most likely you are enzyme, perticularily Lipase deficient. Check out Enzymedica's "Lypo Gold" and "Gold Digest". Add a good probiotic and some Inulin fiber, and whala - you be all better! :)
