Q:

How can I combat post-gallbladder-removal belly fat and weight gain during menopause?

Hello, in October 2008 I was well into menopause but had no real issues with belly fat or overall weight gain. Then I had my gallbladder removed due to painful attacks of my common bile duct, as well as gallstones. I am appalled at the weight I have gained since the surgical procedure. In fact it is so upsetting (none of my clothes fit) that I feel at times clinically depressed. I've never had to fight weight gain before. Now I have an "unsupportive spine" as well, and must take occasional bouts of oral steroids to control the inflammation. I also have had two spinal epidural steroid injections, and wonder if these injections could cause me to gain weight. Any comments would be most welcome. Thank you!

I agree. I had my gall bladder removed in Feb 2015. I began eating more than before but I was also going through tremendous amounts of stress. But thankfully I was scared into losing weight. Pain in knees, back and hands, having to use a cpap machine because I was choking in my sleep. Air coming up from my diagram because my stomache was pushing it up. Fatigue, I could go on and on. One night I was sitting watching a movie and It thought felt like my throat was tightening up or at least narrower than previously. I got panicky because I felt I couldn't breathe properly. My tongue had felt too big for a long time. What was wrong? I searched everywhere on the Internet. What did I find? I was just too heavy. Fat doesn't just go to one or two places on your body, and yes your tongue can get fatter if you get fatter. So I was so scared that I started to eat portion controlled fresh food diet. I ate 5-6 times a day protein based meals and drank lots of water. I blamed everything for my weight gain. I was emotionally eating and killing myself. I'm not saying it was easy, the first week was hard, but I had a nap today without my cpap machine and I fell asleep reading and sleep well. I was surprised when I woke. I use eft and other methods to control my appetite. No drugs no pills. It's all in our minds. I'm adding exercise this week. It's about making excuses, using those excuses and not moving. I still have a long way to go but I did this to myself and must fix it myself and I feel better when I'm trying to fix it instead of stuffing my face for no reason. It feels great to be in control. Having or not having a gall bladder is not the reasons we gain weight. I was obese before and after removal so it was me who had the problem not a physical issue. I know that know after the fact. But for twenty years I have been losing out on my life. No more I'm in charge now, in fact I probably caused gall bladder issues by poor eating. I take all the responsibility for my health. You have to start now today it's your body your temple your life. Xo

I am also in the same boat as you all. I have gained 50lbs since having gallbladder removed and liver resection in 2011. I also had bilateral mastectomy a year before. I never had weight issues before. My surgeon was afraid that I was to thin for the surgery. I am at my lowest point in my life. I have tried everything and nothing seems to work. I am so depressed. I latterly am starving myself and I still gaining weight. If anyone out there knows something that will help please let me know. Thanks praying that this will change. I want to also say it is comforting to know that I am not the only one going through this nightmare.

I'm so glad I found this site because I am having the same weight gain issues since having my gallbladder removed 3 months ago. I've gained about 25 lbs and nothing fits. In addition I still have severe pains in my stomach right where my gallbladder was.

I am having the same issue. I have had my gallbladder out since 2012 and I have gained weight.. before I had the surgery I could lose weight fast. I took phentremine 37.5 and lost 68 lbs in less than 8 months back in 2008. I retried that same prescription and to my surprise I freaking gained weight. So i did research and saw that almost every site I visited talked about taking ox bile if u have had ur gallbladder out. So i ordered some. I am waiting for them to arrive. I pray this helps me. I eat less than 1000 calories a day and exercise and my scale only moves one way UP..

I am in the same boat. I had gall bladder removal in August 2014, however I ended up with an umbilical hernia post surgery. I have gained 5lbs and have a bloated stomach. I have tried nutrisystem and lost 7in one month, but I myself seems to have hunger pains more than I have ever had prior to surgery. I started phenmtermine 37.5 and am on day 2. Luckily for me I have noticed no hunger pains and am able to half of what I would normally eat. I'm hoping that I am able to loose weight .
