My daughter has migraines and has paralysis with them vision she can't see her face will turn red in areas on her face and here speech is backwards there for awhile her head didn't hurt but her neck would hurt real bad. The doctors here in Oklahoma City don't know much about migraines and they have tried to give here tripins medication and she said that could mess her up because she has hemiplegic migraines. She has an appointment for OU medical in April it's taken her 9 months to get there. Every doctor she hasa been to trys to give her medication she pours out her purse and show the doctor what medicine she has allready been given.

Lioness I hope your Ok are you sick with headaches too?? It's so awful to see some one you love with these migraines Carisa's are hemiplegic migraines shes had one experience with the paralysis when she was coming home from the grocery store and all she could do was slap her feet together to get her families attention. they were in the car with her. I hate that we don't have the care here in Oklahoma City like other places do. All we can do is keep praying.

Hi Sandy - Thanks for writing back. I can certainly understand why you would be scared because your daughter has migraines, and I hope that it's providing you with some comfort that she's going to be seen by the specialist. While there is a general belief that migraine headaches are rare in children, the reality is that they are not. The challenge for a parent can be finding medical professionals who will provide the appropriate level of treatment.

One of the things that may help you is to learn as much as you can about migraines in order to help guide your daughter, and to prepare a list of specific questions ahead of the doctor visit so you can make the most the time you get.
Here is the link to our reference page on migraines:

The Migraine Research Foundation has recognized the need to know more about children with migraines and has launched some programs that I think will interest you. They note: Information is lacking for sufferers, parents and medical professionals, and research is minimal. Here's what they do have, and more information about them, and a list of specialized treatment facilities for children with migraines around the country. (Unfortunately none are in Oklahoma.)

Sandy, it has to be painful for you to see your child in pain, and I hope that these resources will be helpful to you. Please let us know what you think, and if you have more questions. We wish the best for both of you. Pat

Hi Anon -
Thank you for writing, and welcome to EmpowHER. I can understand why you would be concerned about your daughter and would want the best possible treatment for her. If I understand your comments, she has been under treatment for migraines and she is going to be seeing a specialist at OU.

OU Medical Center, including The Children's Hospital at OU Medical Center, is Oklahoma's largest and most comprehensive hospital. I'm sorry you had to wait nine months for an appointment, however It's pretty common today for appointments with specialists to take a long time.

I'm not sure what question you're asking, or how we can help you. Can you please clarify what you're asking so that we can assist you? Thanks, Pat
