Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

yes absolutely we all need to report it, so that they know how many adverse affects the flu shot is giving people. It doesnt help if they do not know!

My upper arm and shoulder still aches after three weeks. It is the first time I've had a flu jab, and I'm inclined to think it may be my last.

I am so glad I decided to google this tonight. I recieved my annual flu shot on Oct. 6th at work, it hurt immediately as I was recieving the injection. Approx. 1-2 hours later I was in excruitiating pain in my right upper arm/shoulder even across my shoulder blade. It has been 12 days since recieving the vaccination and I continue to have excruitiating pain daily. I have never experienced this before and thought I may be going nuts. On day 7 I woke up and thought my arm actually feels better today, but on day 8 I took a 4 hour CPR class and the excruitiating pain returned and has yet to go away. After reading all of these posts it is a relief to know that I am not "nuts" and that I am not the only one; however, it is scary to see that this seems to be a long term problem. I am going to make a Dr.'s appt on Monday and hope for the best. Thanks for all of the advice.

I experienced all this from a flu vaccine I received back in 2009. I come back here now and then to see updates, etc. What I can say to you all is, ... You have most likely been injured by either the administration of the vaccine or a reaction to the vaccine itself.... Both of which are REAL and the majority of the doctors will not recognize or believe it. Fight your way through all the fluff they hand you. Demand nerve conduction tests. This test must be done early in order to see the damage. Physical therapy is important. You don't want a Frozen Shoulder. Most of all, take copious notes of your reactions, pain levels, doctor visits, anguish, etc. Go to this website : http://hrsa.gov/vaccinecompensation/index.html . It gives you the how to's on what to do next. You may be eligible to be compensated for your injury. I still have residual pain in my shoulder...no where as bad as it was for the first 2 years. I was compensated. You all deserve better. It is not an experience anyone should have to endure. I'm still afraid to get my flu shot :( . Good Luck and may you all have speedy recoveries.

I received my flu shot on 09/16/14, it hurt worse than normal, but I ignored it and the pain slowly went away. A few days later the pain came back. It was unbearable! I was unable to sleep, daily activities had me in tears, I was miserable. Finally on 09/29/14 I saw the doctor, he prescribed prednisone and hydrocodone and ordered an x-ray to make sure there was no damage to the bone or broken needle, those came back normal. After 2 days on prednisone, I was feeling normal. I finished my 6 day course of prednisone on 10/04/14 and by 10/07/14 the pain was back. I finally went back to the doctor on 10/14/14 and was told I had possible nerve damage and it could take quite a while to heal and this time was given Lidoderm patches and ibuprofen. The pain is slightly better but certain movement aggravates it and there is almost always a slight burning sensation. I get my flu shot every year and this is the first time I've ever had a problem! In hindsight, I should have just gotten the mist!

Are you any better? Your symptoms match mine with the pain and slight burning sensation. I got my shot a month after yours.

I had mine a week ago and a few days later noticed my muscle in my arm was still painful when moving about and I got tingling in my fingers. I saw my doctor and she believes it is muscle bruising and should subside within 2 weeks. I may crack up from the pain before that. She recommended a heat pad, gentle massage and anti inflammatory pain killers. Fingers crossed it clears up as my other shoulder is already damaged due to injury.
