Q:

Is it normal for my arm muscle in my shoulder to hurt 2 weeks after flu shot?

Pain from flu shot

I was happy to receive the flu shot this year, as I feel like it's "doing my part" to stop the spread of the influenza virus. Plus, any inoculation that can either prevent, or lessen the symptoms, of flu is motivation to me!

I've received the flu shot annually, for the past 10 years. I have the typical soreness at site, possibly a little tired that evening. But that's it.

This year...my shoulder muscle (at the site of the injection) is still painful, so much that I can't move my arm forward at shoulder-level, or lift my arm up over my head, without a sharp pain in that one muscle. If my arm is still, it does not hurt. It is affecting my sleep, as I am confined to sleeping on only my right side (it is my left arm that hurts).

Are there any other reports of this flu shot symptom? Did I just not move my arm enough after the shot (kind of "favored it"), or is there something else wrong??

I am also having terrible pain in my arm since my annual, seasonal flu shot that I received almost 4 WEEKS AGO!!!! I have never had this happen with any other vaccine. I work in a hospital, so I had the shot given to me by my dept. nurse. I will admit, when she gave it to me, it hurt a lot more than it ever has. About 6 hours into my shift, I noticed that my arm started to ache, just like "normal." However, by the time I got home it was far from normal. The pain in my arm kept me awake all night long, and now, almost 4 weeks later, I can still barely lift my left arm up higher than my chest. I struggle to do normal, everyday things like wash & dry my hair, take off my shirt, or even sleep. I have no idea what to do. I plan to see my family dr. next week if it doesn't improve. Help please!!!

tell them to try you on a cycle of steroids- I think it will help tremendously- I would not wait.

Hi, my pain has gone on for 4 weeks. I finally convinced my doctor to give me a prednizone pack. It is almost over, however, and I can still feel the pain. I did have a breakthrough, however, in that a nurse said "Yes," the shot was given too high and that the deltoid muscle is in spasm. She suggested a massage therapist or chiropractor. I'm going to try that route. Good luck, everyone.

Referring 10/29 Anonymous. So far my x-ray showed an abnormality that the w/c stated was from an old injury, although I have never had an injury. My ROM is still very limited and I continue to be in pain. My blood work is high on numerous things. I have Sjogren's syndrome and the physician is blaming it on that- I can't get in to see my rheumatologist until the 13th (out of town until then) I saw my primary Dr. today as W/C has essentially discharged me on Friday or so I thought. My primary put me on a round of 5 day steroids so we'll see if that helps. W/C called today stating they made me an appt. to see an ortho surgeon- I explained I felt that was odd due to what was stated to me previously. My appt. is on Friday so I'll let you know what I find out. W/C stated the ortho physician will probably order an MRI. This is just so alarming that so many people have this issue and yet so few physicians will admit you can have severe reactions to the flu shot if given improperly. Hope everyone else is getting better.

My father just received the flu shot Oct. 2009 and is reporting all of the same symptoms. He has been to the Dr. and received medicine too. I find it interesting that when he emailed the people who gave him the shot they found it necessary to say the person who gave him the shot had 30 years of experience? Especially after reading all of the posts! I hope he is feeling better soon, all of the posts will help us decided what to do next!

I am experienceing the same thing I got just the normal flu shot so far and my arm afterwards was sore but it has continues to get worse I have also have gone in to talk to my physician and they blew me off. I went to a redi care at night and they said there is no way it is related to the flu shot. however I was fine untill the flu shot. I cant sleep I have very limited motion and it hurts just setting. Something is not right. I also now found out that Iam pregnant and am about 6-7wks along and am scared about all this could be and how am I going to treat. I am going to the Dr tomorrow and am going to demand answers. I can not take the constent pain and disruption it is causing.

I too am having the same symptoms. The reason I connected them to the flu shot is that the pain was in the same exact places it had been immediately after the shot. It went away, and came back a few days later even worse than originally.
In my case, the shot was definitely not too high (more like a full palm width below the shoulder), but the nurse jiggled the needle as it was going it because someone came up and spoke to her. It did get better for a couple of days, but now is coming and going, seemingly randomly. I got my shot through my work, and the nurse was the same one who's given the flu shots every year for as long as I've been there.
It's still nice to know I'm not the only one. If the pain doesn't resolve soon, I will go see my doctor and see about trying the prednisone.

I received a mandatory flu shot in my l deltoid region. It was given very high almost in my shoulder area. In years past have never had a problem. It has now been one month and my pain mimics rotator cuff syndrome. I have been to the dr. and so far they have only ordered X-ray (normal) and blood work. Would giving an injection in this area cause a rotator cuff tear? I am in significant constant pain. I am 3 yrs s/p spinal fusion so I am not a stranger to pain. I cannot lift my arm out to my side or over my head without significant pain. Wakes me up every night from sleep. Would having an MRI show anything- how should I proceed. Thanks in advance.

Hello Anon - I'm sorry to hear of your pain. It's difficult to know from reading your email if you are dealing with a rotator cuff tear, or perhaps a frozen shoulder. Since the pain has continued, and is affecting your ability to function, I suggest you see your doctor again, or consider going to another doctor for a second opinion. Good luck to you, and please write back and let us know what you learn.
Take good care,
Pat
