i am 4 or five weeks i had an ultra sound and that was what i was told but you see i have been on trimodal for a year before this and other things for many of year due to a car accident back in 2004 i am worried cus i don't know what to do with out something i can barely walk or get out of bed with out anything the pain is so bad with out it what do i do i am going to talk to my doctor but we don't see eye to eye anyway and i get the feeling that he doesn't care for me or anyone for that fact he is old and mean but i have to stay with him cus my hmo... help!!!!!

I was on Lortab during my entire pregnancy and the baby was fine! You have to do what's best for you and your baby...don't listen to anyone else...It is very scary but it's also very scary to be in constant pain and being miserable!!!

SUGABUGA - Yes, taking pain medication while pregnant can harm the fetus, but there are also risks to consider when the mother is in severe pain that is not being managed.
Most HMOs allow you to see both a primary care physician and an OB-GYN at the same time. You need to be getting care for both the severe pain and to maintain good health during your pregnancy. Have you looked into what options you have to see another doctor?

thank you i did talk to the hmo insurance co hat i have and we are getting a new doctor soon and i am being watched and monitored so that the baby well be OK i was told by the ob gyn that some pain med are better then others when pregnant but it is the good that out way the risk that they chose to or not to give something to me.. is this right?

That is great that you took charge and are seeing another doctor! It is very important that you and your doctor do see eye to eye while you are pregnant.
I am not exactly sure what your last question is. Are you asking if there are some pain medications that are good during pregnancy, and these benefits of stopping your severe back pain outweigh the risks to the baby?
Yes, there are acme pain management medications that are safer to use during pregnancy than others. Ther is actually a list of medications that have been shown as safe during pregnancy, and I will post the website for you, so that you can be informed. There are very few drugs that have been proven as safe during pregnancy, but ther are quite a few that are shown as safer alternatives that most likely will not harm the baby. Please know that many women will take acme pain relievers that are safer, like ibuprofen, and it does not harm the baby when taken as directed. Prescription medications would need to be discussed further with your doctor.

August 15, 2010 - 7:25pmyes this did help and answer my question.. you see i am just so worried more so then ever since a co-worker of my soon to be husband just had a baby and the baby will not eat and is crying all the time due to the mother being on pills and drinking and-things like that... The baby has to take medication and stay in the hospital until it is better. the father had no idea she was an addict and i am worried cus i don't want our baby going though that with the pain med I'm on but in our case i need them.. I just don't know cus one doctor says that one thing is OK and the other doctor says that no this is. whom do i trust and what to do? We know that everyone is different in their beliefs (doctors). I have tried to just not take anything and i can't move at all my back locks up and i can't get around etc... I was on two different things for pain with my two girls after the car accident while i was pregnant but the doctors i have now say no that they are not good for the baby what do you do in my shoes when you have an HMO and have a limited choice in care providers.. I'm still lost...

I'm so happy to help.
You have two doctors, and two differing medical opinions. What you can do is write down the brand name and generic names of all the prescription and non-prescription medications you are taking.
Then, you can either look the information up on the internet, send us the information and we research it for you, and/or ask your Pharmacist what the "Category of Drug Use in Pregnancy" each medication is.
For a list of categories, I wrote about them at: Are allergy medicines OK to take while pregnant?. Category A is considered safer (no studies have proven increased risk to fetus), while Category D drug has demonstrated a risk to the fetus, but the benefits of therapy may outweigh the potential risk. Category X is a drug that is not advised for use in pregnancy.
It can be argued that no drug is safe for use during pregnancy. It can also be argued that a pregnant woman with uncontrolled pain (or any medical condition) can be at greater risk for problems (unable to sleep or exercise, unhealthy eating habits, depression or depressed mood). Any time a drug is prescribed, during pregnancy or not: the potential benefits of the medication must outweigh the possible risks.
You may be receiving two different medical opinions, based on what each doctor is comfortable prescribing during pregnancy based on the drugs "Category". Many doctors will prescribe a Category A or Category B drug for use in pregnancy when the benefits outweigh possible risks. (For example, I was prescribed a Category B drug for my allergies, and none of my doctors were concerned by this).
You may have a Category C drug that I could see causing some hesitation by one doctor, and not another.
