Stressed, paranoid and concerned about late period. Please help?

I'm 20 years old and have been on the pill since I was 17. I've always had very light periods that only last between 2-4 days and once I started the pill they became even lighter. They are usually pretty regular and I've never missed a period or had one be exceptionally late. I had sex twice about a month ago and did get my last period a month ago. I can't remember if the last time I had sex was right before or right after my last period though (which is why I'm nervous). I was taking bc and using condoms on both occasions. I know the chances of me being pregnant are incredibly slim statistically in this situation but I need some reassurance because I normally would have gotten my period last thursday and I still haven't gotten it yet (today is tuesday). I have however seriously messed up taking my bc this past month. I missed pills up to days at a time and then took them all at once (up to 3 pills in a day...I know you're not supposed to I don't know what I was thinking). This happened at least twice this month. I was not having sex during this time though. I also decided to just not take the placebos at all because I figured I'd already messed up it up. I have not started a new pack (would have on sunday) because I'm terrified about having not gotten my period yet. Not to mention the fact that I've been incredibly stressed lately (to the point of getting sick from fatigue). Of course worrying about this is only fueling the fire. Please help. I'm way too freaked out to go take a pregnancy test because I'm absolutely petrified it will come out positive and I wont' know what to do.

Hi Paranoid321,
Glad you took the test and it came back with the result you wanted. I hope this has made you feel more reassured.

I took the test tonight. It was ClearBlue and it came out negative! If I don't get my period in other few days I'm going to take another test but I'm SO relieved. Thank you so much for your help I really appreciate it :)

Hi paranoid,
Hi agree with Christine. You had protected sex, and using birth control pills and condoms combined offer great protection from pregnancy. Since you did miss some pills, it will potentially lead to an irregular cycle, and there is the chance of pregnancy with missed pills.

Can you take a home pregnancy test, even though you are scared of the results, so you can be a strong, informed women in-the-know?! It is most likely negative, but what a relief to know now...right!?!

Then, you could continue taking your pills as directed (and, use a condom if you forget pills..no big deal!). You may want to wait until the Sunday after your period to begin a new pack, since you have not had a period yet and you are wondering about pregnancy.

Please take a HPT and let us know the results! You can do it, and will feel so much better (and proud) of yourself. Being scared of a test result is not a healthy way to live, as it can become a serious habit if you are scared about a diagnosis that should be treated promptly. Just take charge of your health: knowledge is power!

I'll "log in" tonight to the site...and will see what your result is! :-)

Hi again,
I am not a doctor, but if I were in your shoes, I would start a new pack on Sunday. You could even start today if you wanted to, and just switch the day stickers that come with each pack to make sure you keep on track with the new schedule. As stated, if you're concerned, don't be afraid to call your prescribing doctor's office and talk with the nurse. That's what they're there for, and they know your personal history. Since you have been off it for a couple weeks, make sure to use backup birth control for a couple weeks (check the information that comes with the pills to be sure about how long it suggests) if you have any sexual encounters.

Thank you very much for your response. Do you think it would be a bad idea for me to start my new pack this coming sunday even though it would be a week late? And is it possible that I may not get my period at all due to the bc complications and stress? As of today I haven't taken a pill since sunday the 12th when i should have started my placebos but didn't.

Hi Paranoid321,
Thank you for your question and for finding EmpowHER. Take a breath. Like you said, you're more than likely not pregnant. When I was younger (like you) and on the pill, I had a similar experience where I would commonly skip a period in the Summertime. It would throw me for a loop, but I never turned up pregnant. Good for you for using back up birth control! That always plays in your favor when you're awaiting a missing period.
Stress and forgetting to take your pills can really mess up your cycle. You know that. You can either:
(1) start taking your pills again today, or wait until Sunday and figure out a method to not forget any, or
(2) call the doctor who prescribed your pills, and have them explain to you what could be going on and suggestions for how to proceed.
Regardless, there's no reason why you can't start taking your pills again. You may want to keep track of your periods, etc. on a calendar or app on your mobile phone, so you will remember these things, and not get as freaked out in the future. If you're protecting yourself, there's no reason to get freaked out. If you miss your period for 90 days, call your doctor to make an appointment so they can rule out any infection or other condition.
Good luck and let us know how you are.
