Why is my period so late? stress?

Hi, i'm almost 23 and my last period started on july 1st and lasted till about the 7th. I have protected sex (condom) with my boyfriend usually once a week, and we make sure we are as careful as possible. My last cycles have been 28 days, 31 days and 38 days. i'm never that regular but it's been almost 42 days this period. i have been pretty stressed this entire month and more so the last couple weeks because of my late period and my boyfriend is leaving to move across the country tomorrow and i knew we would have to break up when he leaves. tonight is my last night with him and i have been heartbroken and worried and stressed. the stress has been so high i've had to take my anxiety herbal drops again, i haven't had to take it in months. i've also been working out far more than i normally do and my sleep patterns have been very off as well. my eating habits are normal, however because of stress i've probably been eating a couple hundred calories less a day. also there have been 3-4 days spread out this last month where i have felt really dry down there, it seemed like it was right before and after ovulation.

i'm concerned as i normally have breast tenderness at least a few days before my period. Sometimes i feel like it may be starting but i'm never sure, it's not as much as usual. I've been pretty emotional and moody the last week but i figured that was because of my boyfriend and i having to break up. i also thought i was starting to get light cramps two nights ago but they went away, normally i get heavy heavy cramps (sometimes i even throw up) about an hour before my period starts. i also tried having protected sex with my boyfriend 2 nights ago and i couldn't for very long because i felt like there wasn't much give at all and it was kind of painful, this is unusual for me.

if someone could give me some advice i would be grateful...it's bad enough i'm going through this loss of someone i love...i don't' want to have to worry about a pregnancy scare as well.

JayJay,

This is very common when you are stressed, if you exercise or sometimes there is no clear reason why we have missed periods. Sometimes they just happen without any medical reasoning. I know this is frustrating but if you have any concern, take a pregnancy test to rule out any possibility of pregnancy.

If there is no pregnancy, go to your physician and they can give you a prescription to force your period to start. Remember, you are under stress and trying to cope with the loss of a loved one. Take your time to heal as your possible depression, stress over possible pregnancy and just trying to maintain may be causing the delay or mild periods. When we, as women, go through tough times, our bodies assimilate.

Keep us updated and I am truly sorry for your loss.

thanks for the response. i'm really hoping it's just stress. since it's been 48 days now and still no sign, besides breasts being sore off and on, i'm thinking i've just completely missed my period and it's more than late. i'm also sick now, i got a fever all day yesterday and now i'm getting bad common cold symptoms. could being sick also affected my period coming on time? even though i became sick after i was supposed to get it

as of right now i'm too scared to get buy a EPT...my friend told me she thinks it's because i'm so stressed and so tiny (i'm a little underweight but i have been my whole life) and that i should wait to see if i get my next period. i cant' afford to have a pregnancy scare right now since i'm planning on going to grad school for the next 6 years! plus we were always extremely careful with me and my loved one's sexual encounters...

Hi jayjay86 -
It sounds like you've had a lot of stress lately. As Cary said in answer to your last question on the site, stress can cause changes in your period. You may also find the following article helpful: https://www.empowher.com/menstrual-cycle/content/menstruation-whats-normal-and-whats-not

Hopefully you will have less stress in the days ahead, and your life as well as your menstrual cycle, will return to normal.

Take care,
Pat

thanks for the response. i guess i'm just more concerned this time as it's been so long, 44 days now. i know i'm much more stressed than last time i was worried but this seems like a long time. i keep thinking i might be feeling PMS symptoms but i'm not sure, they're pretty light if that's what they are.
